Plan a vehicle move across the United States

State-to-state transport can be part of a household relocation, a remote vehicle purchase, seasonal travel or a business delivery. A cross-country shipment follows the same basic planning steps, with more distance and additional coordination between pickup and delivery contacts.

We review routes across the country. Include remote locations, ports, islands or other access requirements in your request so the transport legs and availability can be discussed for the actual shipment.

Build your shipment plan

  1. Share the route. Provide ZIP codes and describe access at both addresses.
  2. Describe every vehicle. Include year, make, model, running condition and modifications.
  3. Choose the equipment. Discuss open or enclosed transport and any loading requirements.
  4. Set your pickup window. Tell us when the car is ready and which dates are flexible.
  5. Arrange handover and receipt. Name a contact at each end and confirm their availability.

Open or enclosed for a long-distance move?

Open car transport moves the vehicle on an uncovered carrier. Enclosed auto transport provides a covered trailer and may suit a car with particular protection or handling needs. Ground clearance, vehicle size and loading access matter for either option.

How route and timing affect the quote

Distance is one factor, but not the only one. Vehicle dimensions and condition, trailer type, pickup and delivery access, the requested window and carrier availability also affect pricing and scheduling. Provide the same shipment details when comparing quotes, and check what each includes. Our car shipping cost guide explains the information needed for a route-specific estimate.

A pickup window and estimated transit time describe different parts of the move. Confirm when the vehicle is expected to be collected and the estimated delivery window after collection. Tell us about flights, moving dates or receiving-hour restrictions before booking.

Plan your shipment by state

Review pickup access, vehicle preparation and quote details for California car shipping and Texas car shipping. We coordinate transport to and from states nationwide; these guides are starting points for planning your specific move.

Specialty transport and guides

Door-to-door pickup and delivery across states

Door-to-door planning starts with the actual addresses, not just the state names. Tell us about gated communities, narrow streets, steep driveways, low branches, parking restrictions and business receiving hours at both ends. A carrier may need an agreed nearby meeting point if the truck cannot safely and legally reach the address.

For a coast-to-coast move, confirm a pickup contact and a receiving contact before you travel. Separate the first date your car is ready from the pickup window and the estimated time in transit after collection. Tell us about a flight, lease handover or dealership deadline so those constraints can be reviewed before booking.

Coordinate the car with your household move

Your vehicle and household goods may travel separately. Plan who can release the car if you leave first, and who can receive it if it arrives before you. Ask about personal belongings before placing anything inside; a vehicle shipment does not automatically include household cargo.

Moving businesses can review our moving company partnerships for coordinating a customer’s vehicle shipment with relocation plans.

Business and multi-vehicle shipments

For dealer transfers, purchases or several vehicles going to different destinations, provide a vehicle list with a pickup location, delivery location, readiness date and contact for each. Tell us whether all vehicles need to move together or can be scheduled separately.

See dealership auto transport, auction car transport and port vehicle pickup for the release and collection details relevant to your shipment.

Common questions

Can I ship a car I bought in another state?

Provide the seller’s contact details and confirm that the vehicle is ready for release. Tell us about business hours, appointment rules and any loading limitations.

Can someone else receive my car?

Arrange this before delivery and confirm the receiving contact with the carrier. That person should be available to inspect the vehicle and complete the delivery paperwork.

What should I do before pickup?

Photograph the vehicle, remove valuables and loose accessories, prepare the keys and disclose mechanical issues. Review the pickup condition report and keep it for the delivery inspection.
